FC Augsburg will have to do without Robert Gumny for the rest of the season and beyond. As the Bavarian Swabians announced, the Pole suffered a torn cruciate ligament.

The FCA announced on Wednesday evening that Robert Gumny was seriously injured during training on Tuesday. More detailed examinations led to the diagnosis of a torn cruciate ligament in the right knee. The Bundesliga club also announced that the 25-year-old had undergone “successful surgery” on Wednesday and is expected to be out for several months.

“After the injury in training, there was initially hope that Robert got off lightly,” explained Augsburg’s sports director Marinko Jurendic in the club’s announcement, but unfortunately “subsequent examinations revealed a serious diagnosis. Robert is an important part of our team. We keep our fingers crossed for him for an optimal healing process. He will receive the best possible support from us so that he can quickly overcome this setback and come back even stronger.”

Completely detached: Will the euphoria around the DFB eleven last?

The full-back came to the Fuggerstadt team from Lech Posen for the 2020/21 season and quickly developed into a considerable factor within the team. So far there are 99 games (two goals) for the Polish international (six internationals).

Ultimately, hardly a factor

Things didn’t go quite so well for Gumny this season. In 2023/24 he only made 13 appearances, seven of which came as a substitute (kicker grade average: 4.17). At the end of November, Gumny was also slowed down by a bruised rib.

In the second half of the season he hardly played a role in FCA coach Jess Thorup’s plans; he only came on as a substitute in the 1-0 defeat in Mainz. It is now clear that he will no longer be used for the seventh-place team in the final stretch of the season.
