A big one is leaving the big football stage!

Gladbach fans in mourning: Borussia favorite ends his career

For five of these seven years, the Brazilian formed a congenial duo with the man who announced the end of his career on Raffael’s 39th birthday: Lars Stindl (35) is calling it quits at the end of the current season.

The former Fohlen captain is hanging up his football boots one year after his emotional farewell to Borussia in May 2023. After the 2022/23 season, the former German international decided against ending his career and instead moved back home.

Stindl announced the decision on Thursday in a joint statement with his current club, Karlsruher SC. He played for Borussia from 2015 to 2023, quickly worked his way into the hearts of Foal fans – and became Borussia captain after Granit Xhaka (31) said goodbye.

The past few months have not been easy for Stindl in terms of sport: at the end of March, the 35-year-old is still waiting to play in a competitive game for the first time this year. Stubborn calf problems have kept him out of action in recent months – he is currently working on his comeback.

As is now clear, it will probably be the last comeback of his 15-year professional career. In March 2008, Stindl celebrated his Bundesliga debut in the KSC jersey. In total, the ex-Gladbacher played 376 first division games with 156 goals.

A highlight of Stindl’s career was his successful participation in the 2017 Confed Cup. After two years in the Borussia jersey, the offensive all-rounder became the focus of the national team, was nominated for the tournament – and scored the winning goal in the final against Chile (1 :0). Stindl played the last of his eleven international matches in 2018 against Brazil (0-1).
