Farewell Letter to Christian Streich: A Tribute from Nils Petersen

Nils Petersen (35) played under Christian Streich in Freiburg from January 2015 to summer 2023 and is the SC record scorer with 105 goals. In kicker he writes to his long-time trainer – whom he still prefers to use first name rather than first name.

Dear coach,

Despite the offer of you, I’ll stick with you for now. Because I don’t particularly like change. Now you are changing everything and the whole of football Germany is in mourning. Not 60 more days and things will get very emotional. Most of all for you – you love the sport, the people around it, your boys and this wonderful club far too much. No matter who becomes champion, who reaches the Champions League or who wins the cup: everything is secondary. The spotlight will be on you. Please enjoy and soak it up. The applause, every poster, every chant, the respect of the opponent. No matter how difficult it will be for you, you deserve this appreciation, this melancholy from all football sympathizers.

I even saw tears of emotion from my grandmother and mother at breakfast after their farewell video. I wanted to spice up the mood – with the reminder that I was rarely allowed to play among you right from the start. But that didn’t help because you simply won the hearts of everyone, not just football fans, with your style.

They were the first to get into the stadium despite having a wheel disadvantage compared to our cars, which were much too big.

People really enjoy listening to you, you certainly don’t get any stupider and you never get the impression that you take yourself too seriously. Which you could definitely do with your CV. This peculiarity is exactly what people and players like me appreciate about you. They will be missed by all football fans and will never be forgotten: because unique pieces are defined as unique. It was a tremendous pleasure for me to be able to listen to you for years, to go through every fire for you and to experience humanity and gratitude in this business. You embodied that every day in the dressing room, where we gave everything for our colors for years.

You were the first to get into the stadium despite the wheel disadvantage compared to our cars, which were much too big, and you were the last to leave. With 147 ideas in mind on how to succeed on the weekend. Starting this summer, delete your hard drive and keep your best memories where it hurts a little for all fans: in their hearts. We’ll see each other in the stands in the new season and then reminisce over a glass of vino. THANKS!

Nils Petersen
