Facing Nightmare: The Struggles of RWD Molenbeek and OL’s Sister Team

Having fallen to last place in the Belgian championship, RWD Molenbeek is living a nightmare. OL’s sister team at Eagle Football has several players from the Rhône. Some of them are paying dearly for the poor form of the Brussels club.

Within the Eagle Football galaxy, curves intersect too often. This is the case for OL and RWD Molenbeek. In the first part of the season, while OL were in sporting agony, the promoted Belgians had a more than decent championship. The reality is quite different in 2024 for the two formations. While OL finally has a string of successes, Molenbeek has not won any of its last 12 Belgian championship matches. The RWDM is now at the bottom and will have to save its skin during the next 6 matches, the Play-Down, a mini-championship between the last 4 in the ranking.

Sanchez and Koné sacrificed in Molenbeek

A difficult situation for Molenbeek and a little for OL. Indeed, the Rhone club has loaned some of its players to its Belgian counterpart. In the Molenbeek ranks, we find Jeff Reine-Adelaide, Mamadou Sarr, Florent Sanchez, Pathé Mboup as well as Youssouf Koné whose contract at OL ended last summer. These players are all suffering from the difficult situation of the Belgian club but it is worse for Koné and Sanchez. The two men have just been sent to the reserve team by the new staff led by Bruno Irles.

This is no surprise for Koné, who has had little advantage defensively since his arrival. It’s more surprising for Florent Sanchez, who pays for being a little soft in the fight for maintenance. At a time when the RWDM and its supporters want players with concern and character, Sanchez appears too self-effacing on the pitch. A harsh judgment for Sanchez? Not sure. In recent days, defender Moussa Sissako was fired from the club for wearing the Kortrijk jersey belonging to his brother in training. Kortrijk is a direct competitor to Molenbeek for maintenance. For his part, Bruno Irles will be fired even though he had just arrived a few weeks ago. If Textor’s OL looks like paradise since the arrival of Pierre Sage, it’s truly hell for everyone at RWDM at the moment.
