Exploring the Tom & Jerry Inspirations in One Piece 1111: Luffy’s Gear 5 Transformation

By Andrea Moffa – 25 March 2024

The intention is now increasingly clear Oda to alleviate the burden of his work, creating gods always fun drawings and which underline his carefreeness in carrying out a colossal and complex work like that of One Piece. In the last year, Luffy has been the protagonist who led us to reach the pinnacle of his way of doing things thanks to the introduction of the Gear 5a transformation capable of make anything possible.

We will not repeat an analysis of why the Gear 5 is perfect for the job, as we have already done so in a previous article, but we will continue one of the inspirations mentioned within itincreasingly evident within One Piece and with numerous references now that Luffy’s transformation is used more often: the one towards the Tom & Jerry cartoon.

The two iconic characters are famous all over the world and it is quite easy for One Piece fans to find their references in the work. Now, after the hilarious clash with Kaido, characterized by multiple videos that compared the moves used with the cartoon, even in the Egghead saga we were able to find multiple references. In the last 5 chapters alone, there seems to be almost all the actions seen in a rather iconic scene.

Plates, punches and baseball bats

The scene in the reference episode for some of Luffy’s last attacks was naturally published as a meme on Reddit with the wording referring to how crazy this Gear 5 was. The scene is the one where Tom stuzzica Spike tied to the rope of his kennel and unable to reach him, hitting him with various objects until he fainted: a bit like Luffy does with Kizaru and the Stars of Wisdom.

In the chapter 1109 let’s see how Luffy takes Kizaru and Saturn into his hands, avoiding their attacks, and then crush them together and crush them like thin slices, then throwing them away and causing Kizaru to crash into the ship. The move is also called Cymbal (Percussion cymbals) and is also characterized by the stun stars on the 2 characters, which referring to the Tom & Gerry episode we see both with the use of the cymbals and with Spike who is stunned and thrown away.

Finally right in the chapter 1111the last one released before the long hiatus, another of these scenes has been recreated, namely the one in which Tom forges a baseball bat using Spike’s teeth, and then hit him. The inspiration is very clear in the chapter, where Luffy plucks a palm tree from the ground to smooth it with his teeth, creating a baseball bat in seconds and repelling Saturn’s attack. Oda’s imagination is not ending, indeed with such inspiration, the possibilities are truly endless: exactly the same words used to describe Nika’s potential. See you in the next chapter where we hope to also find the cake smashed in the face of one of the Stars of Wisdom.
