Exploring the Swiss Open 2024: History, Prize Money, and Livestreaming Opportunities

The conclusion of the All England Open on 17 March saw the badminton action move across Europe to Switzerland. Even though many top shuttlers did not participate in the Swiss Open 2024, the tournament is a key part of the BWF World Tour’s European leg and comes with a decent prize money pool. Before we get to the payouts, however, here is a peek at the competition’s history.

Held for the first time in 1955, the Swiss Open became a BWF Super Series tournament in 2007. While it was later dropped down to the status of a BWF Grand Prix Gold event in 2011, it eventually regained its Super Series status (a Super 300 competition to be precise) in 2023. Nevertheless, the tournament’s Super 300 status was not enough to entice many top badminton players to participate, especially since the competition started just two days following the conclusion of a marquee Super 1000 event like the All England Open 2024.

The Swiss Open is organised by Swiss Badminton with sanction from the Badminton World Federation (BWF). In the recent past, the tournament has been cancelled only once — in 2020 owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.

China’s Chen Jin and Lin Dan hold the record for the most titles in the men’s singles category with three wins each. On the other hand, Swiss badminton player Liselotte Blumer has won the most titles in the women’s singles category (six). Koki Watanabe of Japan and Thailand’s Pornpawee Chochuwong were the winners of the 2023 edition in the men’s and women’s singles categories, respectively.

Now that we have brought you up to speed with the history of the badminton tournament, let us take a close look at the Swiss Open 2024, including the prize money on offer for the winners, the schedule and venue of the finals, and where you can livestream the matches.
