He is the preferred candidate to succeed Thomas Tuchel as coach of FC Bayern. The Munich team would love to sign Xabi Alonso as their new coach. Honorary President Uli Hoeneß estimates the chances are slim in the BR24Sport exclusive interview.

Xabi Alonso is probably the hottest personality on the European coaching market at the moment. With Bayer Leverkusen he is unbeaten in all competitions and is on the verge of winning at least the German championship. It goes without saying that this success arouses desire.

At his former club Bayern Munich, for whom the Spaniard played between 2015 and 2018, Alonso is also said to be at the top of the list for the already decided replacement of Thomas Tuchel. Honorary President Uli Hoeneß does not believe that a return campaign will be successful. This will be “very difficult, not to say probably impossible,” said the 72-year-old in an exclusive interview with BR24Sport.

Hoeneß on Alonso: I can imagine him staying in Leverkusen

Hoeneß believes that the transfer would probably not fail because of the German record champions but rather because of Alonso himself. He could certainly “imagine that, the way I got to know him and appreciate him, he would be more inclined to carry on because he doesn’t want to leave it behind now.” The 42-year-old took over the Werkself and turned the then relegation candidate (17th place) into a likely future German champion. Alonso’s team is ten points ahead of Munich with eight match days remaining and is in the quarter-finals of the Europa League and the DFB Cup semi-finals.

Hoeneß: We would like to sign him

“He is now training at a club that is currently in the process of becoming German champions. He has a lot to thank this club for, and so does she,” says Hoeneß. According to Hoeneß, this collaboration could extend beyond the summer. “If he had had two or three years more success, it would probably be easier to get him out there,” Hoeneß estimates the chances are slim, but doesn’t want to give up yet. “We would like to sign him. If that doesn’t work, it will be the task of the sporting management to look for and find alternatives.”
