Exciting Day Two Highlights from Judo Grand Slam in Tbilisi, Georgia

Second day of the Judo Grand Slam in Tbilisi, Georgia, with spectacular clashes and breathtaking performances on the program to the delight of the spectators.

In the under 63 kg category, world number one Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard returns to the final, this time facing Angelika Szymanska. The Canadian grabbed her opponent to score waza-ari and win gold.

IFJ Sports Director Michael Tamura was on hand to present the medals.

Among the local favorites, 2012 Olympic champion and 2021 world champion Lasha Shavdatuashvili was in form in the under 73 kg category. Facing Karen Galstian, the Georgian wasted no time in securing the gold medal and generating enthusiasm in the arena.

He received his medals from the President of the Georgian Judo Federation, Giorgi Atabegashvili.

“When I compete in front of my people, I have no right to lose. Only victory. No other results. Just focus on winning. Thanks to my supporters, I always have to fight to the end and give back my happy people” said Lasha Shavdatuashvili after her match.

The final of the under 70 kg category pitted the two best players in the world against each other Sanne Van Dijke and Barbara Matić. The Croatian knocked out her Dutch opponent… and quickly won the victory.

She received her medal from Chafik EL Kettani, member of the IFJ Medical Commission.

“It’s really nice because they liked my throw, and the atmosphere is very good, they applaud all day. I love it, I think it’s my lucky place” enthused Barbara Matić.

Timur Arbuzov won the under 81 kg category with confidence! This is his first gold medal.

The medals were presented by IFJ Director of Chief Referees Armen Bagdasarov.

National pride was even greater when a special ceremony was organized to honor Avtandili Tchrikishvili’s journey. The Georgian judo legend, 2014 world champion and three-time European champion, gave a speech as did Giorgi Atabegashvili, president of the Georgian Judo Federation.
