Excitement Builds for the 2024 African Games in Accra, Ghana

The African Games, a multi-sport competition of continental scope, are preparing to host a new edition rich in emotions. From March 8 to 24, 2024, African athletes will meet in Accra, the capital of Ghana, to compete in various disciplines, including football, which begins this Thursday 7 and which already promises exciting clashes.

The dates of the 2024 African Games

The 2024 African Games are officially held from March 8 to 24, 2024, but the football event begins a day earlier, on March 7. Athletes will compete in various disciplines (football, taekwondo, athletics, judo, karate, wrestling, swimming, beach volleyball, triathlon, table tennis and badminton), thus offering a leading sporting spectacle on the African continent.

Where are the 2024 African Games taking place?

The 2024 edition of the African Games will take place in Accra, the Ghanaian capital. By hosting this major event, the city is preparing to receive athletes from across the continent, promising an organization that meets expectations and infrastructure ready to host the competitions. Due to economic pressures, delays in preparation and differences between African sports confederations and the African Union over marketing rights, the Games, which were initially scheduled for August 4 to 19, 2023, therefore take place from August 8 to 19. March 23, 2024, but retain the name Accra 2023. Furthermore, the last edition took place in 2019 in Rabat, the capital of Morocco.

The men’s team from Burkina Faso and the women’s team from Nigeria won the gold medal.

Qualifiers for the men’s event

For the men’s football event which pits the under-20 categories against each other, the qualified teams reflect the talent and competitiveness of African football. The participants are the teams that managed to reach the quarter-finals of the 2023 Africa U20 Cup of Nations, as well as the host country, Ghana.
