Even KVM captain Rob Schoofs is slightly surprised: “Around New Year we were only concerned with relegation”

With 23 out of 27, KV Mechelen has a chance of a place in the Champions’ Play-offs. “We have to win in Leuven on Sunday,” says Rob Schoofs, who was a guest in Extra Time together with his ex-coach Steven Defour.

After an unlikely catch-up race, KV Mechelen has entered the top 6. “Let’s hope we’re still there next week,” Rob Schoofs smiles in Extra Time.

“We only have one option: win on Sunday in Leuven, otherwise we won’t be there,” he fears.

“It will be a razor-sharp match. I have read that we will play in a full house, it will be a nice atmosphere.”

“And that while around New Year we were only busy with the relegation battle,” Schoofs explains in Extra Time. “We wanted to get points as quickly as possible to put that behind us.”

What KV Mechelen has done with verve. With 23 out of 27 in 2024, the ticket for the Champions’ Play-offs is almost booked.

“We have achieved a very impressive series. The top 6 would be the icing on the cake,” Schoofs realizes.

“If Rob is good, KV Mechelen is very good”

KV Mechelen continued the impressive series under Besnik Hasi, the successor of Steven Defour who was also a guest in Extra Time.

“We also lost under the new coach,” Schoofs consoled his former coach.

“The turnaround started after the New Year against Ghent. We gained confidence there and confidence is everything. Afterwards, players returned from injury and there were young people who broke through.”

“Rob brings a lot of peace to the team,” says Defour. “If Rob is good, KV Mechelen is very good. He has the brilliance of the very best players in the Jupiler Pro League.”

Almost at Union

Anyone who plays in the Champions’ Playoffs can dream out loud about Europe. Something that Rob Schoofs has not often experienced.

“That would be nice, yes. Playing football against great opponents,” he muses in Extra Time.

“At KAA Gent I was not on the list for the European campaign. I still have some heartache about that,” says the midfielder who could also have played with the leader.

“After the cup final, Union asked if I wanted to make the switch. After the loss I was down for a while and thought about it, but I had a good feeling about KV Mechelen,” says Schoofs in the football talk show.

“They wanted to take a step forward and I have absolutely no regrets. I am happy in Mechelen.”
