European Union removes sanctions imposed on Nikita Mazepin

Fired for Russian invasion of Ukraine

Nikita Mazepin lost his seat in the Haas team after the outbreak of war between Russia and Ukraine in February 2022, being replaced by Kevin Magnussen. His seat was financed by the sponsorship of Uralkali, a company owned by his father Dmitry, but from the team They immediately decided to cut their ties with the gas company after the start of the conflict.. This decision led to the Russian’s dismissal on the eve of the start of the 2022 season.

Like almost all Russian teams and athletes, the pilot, along with his father, was sanctioned by the EU in March of that year. The reason for the sanction, originally, was that they were included among those who “supported and benefited from the government of the Russian Federation or provided it with a substantial source of income, or were associated with listed individuals or entities”. By taking advantage of this last clause, the former Haas driver has managed to have the decision revoked.

The General Court of the EU has today annulled the measures taken against him, arguing that “the association between Mr. Nikita Mazepin and his father “It is not established in any way from an economic or capital perspective or by the existence of common interests.”.
