Enhancing Communication and Accuracy: Permanent VAR Teams in Jupiler Pro League Play-Offs

In the play-offs of the Jupiler Pro League, permanent VAR teams will be used. The Professional Refereeing Department (PRD) wants to improve communication behind the scenes and with the field. “We put the puzzle together every two match days,” it says.

The annual visit to Tubize just before the play-offs is over.

Players and coaches from all first division teams will then enter into dialogue with the referees, the Referee Department and the Belgian Football Association. The latter proudly present some novelties.

Peter Willems, former CEO of Oud-Heverlee Leuven, was appointed director of the Professional Refereeing Department. He wants to build on the work of previous years.

“Last season’s play-offs were particularly successful, thanks to specific match preparations, teamwork and good physical preparedness,” the new director explained.

Permanent VAR teams will work together for better communication among themselves and with the site.

Peter Willems

This year the Referee Department will change the allocation system.

“No longer one person, but a team will make the decisions,” says Willems. “We also give the refs a tactical football analysis report, with information about the teams in question. This should allow a ref to anticipate better.”

“In addition, our regular VAR teams will always work together. This should ensure better communication with each other and with the field. We always put the puzzle together every two match days.”

“In Play-off II we want to give opportunities to emerging talents and we will return to a system of observers. After all, we feel that not everyone still knows the rules (Laws of the Game, ed.). We will discuss them in videos, among other things. explain the rules a little more.”

The play-offs will also be played with a VAR in 1B. A kind of alternative VAR, because there are fewer cameras available there.

On to quasi-error-free competition management

The margin of error must also be reduced.

“We will keep what is good and we will improve what can be done. In the long term, we want to achieve 90 percent correct decisions on the field, and 99 percent after VAR intervention.”

“We are now at 87.2 percent on the field and after VAR intervention at 94.5 percent. That it is possible was shown last year during the play-offs, when 93 percent of the decisions made on the field were correct. ”

Several ways are being considered to reduce the margin of error.

“First of all, these are already improvements in technology, for example in the way the lines are drawn.”
