Empowering Women: Self-Defense Course in Südtirol Encourages Confidence and Safety

Unfortunately, girls and women are increasingly victims of violence in Südtirol too. It is even more important that they know how to defend themselves”. The Südtirol Freiheit women’s group also thinks so and recently organized a self-defense course in Bozen. 30 girls and women of all ages and from all parts of the area participated. Fabian Walch, the first Austrian grand master of the Japanese martial art “Hakko Ryu Ju-Jutsu”, was hired as coach. This is a so-called peacetime martial art that is about pure self-defense. Walch has been practicing this martial art for over 20 years and has been teaching in his club at the Innsbruck judo center since 2009.

During a three-hour self-defense course together with his training partner Mathew, Walch provided the participants with valuable tips and tricks. Among other things, a stable posture and a confident attitude were practiced, as well as simple but effective defensive techniques in various positions and situations. “In teams of two, what we had learned was then practically deepened“the women said. Eva Klotz, MP Myriam Atz Tammerle and MP Gudrun Kofler were present.

Fabian Walch emphasized that it is important to practice what you have learned over and over again in order to be able to remember it intuitively in an emergency. “Of course, a self-defense course is only the first impulse”, sottolinea Karin Meister, portavoce di South Tyrol Freedom. “Self-defense should also be part of sports and gymnastics lessons in schools”.

Walch and Meister stress that any act of violence should be reported immediately: “Because only in this way can the authorities and political leaders finally act and stop looking the other way!”
