The Judo club of Gorron in Mayenne offers a new activity, dedicated to women: self-defense classes, on Friday evenings. What can we learn there?

For several years, the Gorron judo club has been collecting requests from women. They wanted self-defense lessons. The idea is to have the knowledge to defuse situations, or even defend yourself physically, in the event of attack.

Pedagogy and deterrence

“Self defense is not judo, because the judoka does not have the right to use what he knows outside of the tatami,” indicates Jean Gougeon, judo professor at the JCG. Every Friday, women will be able to come to learn elements of pedagogy, to dissuade, to ease tensions, to impress.

And, on the other hand, to have good physical reflexes to parry, which means knowing holds, and using them when necessary. But, above all, we are not aiming for attack, only defense.”

The club is currently in the testing phase, to find out if there will be enough people to maintain the course. This takes place every Friday at 7 p.m. A longer-term implementation could be validated in September.

The arm lock…

The teaching of gestures borrows elements adapted from judo, but also from ju-jitsu, with mastery, for example, of arm lock techniques, or to bring down a potential attacker.

The group will not be mixed, it will only be accessible to women. However, there are no age limits. Budding judokates can come at the end of middle school and high school, at the age of 14 or 15. “The sessions last 1 hour 30 minutes. By coming every week, progress is rapid.

As the women will be among themselves, they will be able to progress at their own pace, without having the risk of training for example with a male judo learner who often has more strength, and can be a little brutal, even without meaning to.” . The idea is also to allow women to respond to the physical violence of which they may be victims, in the street, or elsewhere.

From industry to education

Most of the time, Gorron’s lessons will be taught by Jean Gougeon, 40 years old. “He always wanted to be a judo teacher. I trained him when he was 5 years old,” says Hervé Degasne, director of the municipal sports office.

“And, already at the time, he was considering this activity! After a few years in the industry, he decided to retrain. He passed the competition. It was his dream. He succeeded. Today he can use his 5th dan black belt level to pass on what he knows. Running this course will also allow him to definitively validate his career as a judo teacher.” Hervé Degasne will also make his contribution on certain occasions.

To note. Self Defense classes for women. Every Friday evening, 7 p.m., at the Gorron dojo (next to the swimming pool). Organization by the Judo Club Gorronnais. Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes. Information and reservations on 07 85 78 77 04.
