Eintracht Frankfurt Faces Setback Against Borussia Dortmund in Bundesliga Fight for International Standing

Eintracht Frankfurt is fighting for a place in international business in the Bundesliga. However, the Hessians had to forego points at Borussia Dortmund.

For around 80 minutes it looked as if Eintracht Frankfurt would steal at least one point from Dortmund. But then Mats Hummels headed home a free kick from Julian Brandt and made it 2-1 for BVB. Frankfurt shouldn’t come back. Quite the opposite: in stoppage time, Emre Can increased the score to 3-1 with a penalty. A bitter setback for Eintracht.

Coach Dino Toppmöller was served. He was particularly annoyed about the goal they conceded to make it 2-1: “Once again, we are too careless when it comes to standard situations. That upsets me enormously.” Of the last nine goals conceded, the Hessians conceded six from a corner or free kick. “The boys are depriving themselves of their wages,” complained Toppmöller.

But the weakness in the standard was not the only reason for the defeat. The key to success “would have been a better game with the ball,” said the coach: “We only had 35 percent possession of the ball. We weren’t brave enough.”

Distance to the front and back

Eintracht Frankfurt continues to stand still. In the Bundesliga table, the Hessians are in sixth place with 40 points. The gap to fifth place (Rasenballsport Leipzig) is already nine points, but the lead to seventh place (FC Augsburg) is also five points.

After the international break, Toppmöller and his team will face Union Berlin on Easter Saturday. Pursuer Augsburg has 1. FC Köln as guests.
