Eight-Year-Old Twin Badminton Champions Train for Success

They are only eight years old, but every day they train with the discipline of a highly competitive athlete. They get up at six in the morning and immediately get ready to go to the badminton court at the Regatas Club, where both little girls are members. They put themselves in the hands of their coach to do some calisthenics and then, racket in hand, they exercise their reflexes by preventing the dozens of feathers thrown at them from falling to the ground.

Catalina and Miranda have that complicity that only twin siblings possess. Their chemistry on the court was evident since they began practicing this sport two years ago, motivated by their parents. During this time, they have achieved great triumphs on the national badminton circuit: in 2023, for the second consecutive year, they became national champions in doubles.

“The most difficult thing about this sport is staying focused, especially when you have to reverse a score,” says Catalina, the more talkative of the two sisters. “When we play together we need a lot of coordination, but fortunately we understand each other very well,” Miranda adds, more slowly.

These days, this duo is preparing to arrive in the best shape at the beginning of the national circuit, which will take them to Arequipa, Chiclayo, Tingo María and Ica. They also compete in singles, and on more than one occasion they have had to face each other. “They are both very competitive, but they understood that, first of all, they are sisters and, beyond the sports rivalry, we must always congratulate whoever beat us,” Karina Flores, her mother, tells us.

The dream of these athletic sisters is to be badminton world champions, like their compatriot Diego Elías. They know that with effort and dedication everything is possible to achieve. And that they will always have each other to support them, on the court and off it. //
