PORT ST. LUCIE, Florida – The trumpets will begin to sound soon.
Puerto Rican closer Edwin Díaz, who has thrown multiple live batting practice sessions this first but has yet to appear in a game, will see action for the first time Tuesday during a minor league game.
Once the Mets’ star closer completes this step, he will begin pitching in Grapefruit League games.
Díaz is completing his recovery process from a ruptured patellar tendon in his right knee suffered last March during the celebration of Puerto Rico’s victory over the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic.
The 29-year-old right-hander and two-time All-Star posted a 1.31 ERA and saved 32 games in 2022 before signing a five-year, $102 million deal with the same Mets that winter.
