The energy is different. The adrenaline is pumping. Spring training serves a different purpose for players like him, and we have quite a few on our team. “I had a feeling it was a strong beginning,” Burnes stated. “The fans were exceptional today. They showed up, a sold-out crowd, and were fully engaged from the very first pitch. It was an amazing experience to take in, knowing it was only Game 1 and we have 161 more games like this. These fans are truly dedicated and passionate about the team. I have no doubt that they will continue to support us from March 28 to Oct. 1.”
His debut performance supported this statement as 45,029 spectators at Camden Yards witnessed him throw for six innings, allowing only one run. The game was cut short when manager Brandon Hyde decided to remove him from the game after 82 pitches. Burnes surrendered a solo home run to Angels center fielder Mike Trout in the opening inning, but then went on to retire the next 16 batters.
Burnes made his mark in the history books of the Baltimore Orioles’ opening day games. He matched Mike Mussina for the second-highest number of strikeouts by a Baltimore pitcher in an opening day start, second only to Dave McNally’s 13 in 1970. The Baltimore Orioles may only have Burnes for one year before he becomes a free agent. However, his addition to their rotation solidifies their position as World Series contenders. While every team has a top pitcher leading its rotation, Burnes stands out as an ace no matter which team he plays for.
Burnes, who is 29 years old, joined the Baltimore Orioles in January via a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers. As a three-time All-Star and 2021 National League Cy Young Award winner, he brings valuable skills to the team. During spring training, Burnes had a disappointing 6.75 ERA in five starts in the Grapefruit League, but he remained determined to work on his pitch variety rather than solely focusing on preventing runs.
At the beginning of the season, Burnes was unable to play due to a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his throwing elbow. As a result, the Orioles will heavily rely on him to consistently provide strong performances and pitch for extended periods throughout games. He is widely regarded as one of the top choices to fulfill this role, as he ranks fifth among all pitchers in both innings pitched (628 1/3) and quality starts (63) since 2020.
