On March 14, in just over a week, Domenico Tedesco will reveal his selection for the friendly matches in Ireland and England. It will have few surprises, but a newcomer clearly deserves a chance.
We know it, Domenico Tedesco will not experiment during the next international window. The coach of the Red Devils was very clear on this subject a little month ago, in the columns of Newspaper : “We don’t have time to experiment, we will go there with the best possible core” (read here). A little cold shower, perhaps, for some who still hoped to get their chance.
But Tedesco leaves a small door open, all the same: “the best possible core” implies that if a player proves essential, he will be called up. Offensively, there is no real room for surprises: Lukaku, Batshuayi, Openda, De Ketelaere, Trossard, Bakayoko, Doku, all should be. In the middle, there are uncertainties at worst (Keita? Vermeeren? Vranckx?), but we don’t really see any newcomers arriving.
Koni De Winter seems unavoidable
On defense, it’s a different story. During the last gatherings, two players were present who have since gone through a much more difficult period: Ameen Al-Dakhil and Zinho Vanheusden. No need to return to the criticisms coming back every 3 months about Wout Faes, or the pleas coming back even more often (especially in the north of the country) concerning a return of Toby Alderweireld to the selection.
In short: the Belgian central defense could use the talent of a certain Koni De Winter, holder and in constant progress with Genoa. The former pillar of the Espoirs had already been called up last November, but a rather unwelcome broken nose deprived him of breathing the air of the A team for the first time.
This time, he should not miss out on his first selection with the Red Devils. After all, Tedesco has always pulled a rabbit out of his hat since his arrival, even when it was unlikely. If Ireland and England act as a dress rehearsal for Euro 2024 and it will therefore be necessary to align the starters, this international window is clearly more suited to last-minute integration than the one which will arrive just before the Euro, and will be reserved for the 23 players selected for the competition…
