Experience Arizona to the fullest: rodeo, baseball, running and much more

From the world’s oldest rodeo in Prescott to jet boating on Lake Havasu and pickleball just about everywhere, Arizona offers a wide variety of professional sporting events and competitions for visitors to enjoy, including traditional sports such as American football, basketball, baseball, hockey and soccer.

Rodeo

Cowboy culture continues in Arizona, where many professional rodeos are held each year. Two of the oldest rodeos in the world have taken place there since the 1880s: that of Prescott, in early July and that of Payson in mid-August. Some rodeos combine cowboys and Native American traditions; like the Tohono O’odham Nation Rodeo & Fair, in southern Arizona, and the White Mountain Apache Tribal Fair & Rodeo, in the north. An hour north of Phoenix, Wickenburg is the “Team Roping Capital of the World,” and the ideal base for horseback riding enthusiasts, who can stay at one of three ranches in the area: the Flying E Ranch , Kay El Bar Ranch or the Rancho de Los Caballeros.

Marathon and running

Runners explore and enjoy the views with every stride on the countless trails that crisscross the Sonoran Desert, the forests of northern Arizona and the Phoenix metro area. Flagstaff is a destination of choice for many professional and Olympic endurance runners, who consider it an optimal training location for its high altitude and natural beauty. You can also run among Sedona’s spectacular red rocks by participating in the RunSedona 5K, 10K or Half Marathon, a one-of-a-kind scenic race. With year-round sunny weather, runners can also soak up the beauty of Arizona by participating in the Tucson Marathon, the Mesa Marathon, and the Rock N’ Roll Marathon in the Phoenix area, all of which are qualifying events for the famous Boston Marathon.
