At FC Bayern, looking ahead is a look into the unknown. After Xabi Alonso announced on Friday that he would stay at Bayer Leverkusen beyond the summer, the Munich team has to look elsewhere in the search for a successor to Thomas Tuchel.

Sports director Max Eberl is currently not only dealing with the difficult search for a suitable and willing coach, but also with one or two personnel in the FC Bayern squad.

This applies, for example, to Alphonso Davies, to whom the Munich team made an offer to extend his contract including an ultimatum. This, in turn, did not go down well with the Canadian’s advisor. It is also unclear what will happen next with Joshua Kimmich, Leroy Sané or Leon Goretzka.

It is already clear that a new winger, Nestory Irankunda, will join the team. Bayern had already announced the signing of the 18-year-old Australian last year, and fans and those in charge are likely to be particularly happy at the moment.

He recently scored a hat-trick for his current club, Adelaide United.

It remains to be seen whether the talent will play a direct role with the professionals next season. Didi Hamann now suggested to the Bayern bosses that they should keep youngsters like Irankunda in mind when looking for a coach.

FC Bayern: Didi Hamann would like van Bommel or Demichelis as a coach

The new trainer “should above all develop a sporting concept that people can believe in again,” demanded the TV expert in an interview with the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”.

Specifically, this means: “Don’t give a Josip Stanišić and then get a Sacha Boey for this position for 30 million. At some point people won’t understand that anymore, and rightly so.”

It is important to employ more talented young professionals again in the future. “From my point of view, it has to be about getting a coach who wants to accompany young players like Aleksandar Pavlović,” explained Hamann and added a small tip in the direction of Tuchel: “So not another world coach who only wants to the transit is.”

The former Bayern professional has two specific names in mind that could be considered for the position in Munich following this approach.

“I would be really interested to see whether the fans in Munich would accept it if you brought in a younger coach like Mark van Bommel or Martín Demichelis and let him build something with young players – even at the risk of being in the first year maybe only come third.”

Both have a past at FC Bayern and have collected titles with FCB for years. And yet both names are now surprising. Van Bommel once had a disastrous failure as coach of VfL Wolfsburg, Demichelis is currently coaching River Plate and had publicly ruled out an early departure.

In the not too far-fetched case that neither of them returns to Munich, Hamann has another solution on his list: “But if it’s still about training stars in particular, I would like to see Zinédine Zidane here – a man of the world who has won everything.”

Tuchel has also achieved international honors. He won the Champions League with Chelsea and won in France with PSG. However, he never seemed to be held in high regard by Hamann, who regularly criticized the coach.

Didi Hamann explains his criticism of Thomas Tuchel

“I am convinced that a coach needs a good relationship with his players. That’s why I was a little harsher in my criticism when Tuchel publicly stated that players couldn’t play a certain position.”the TV expert now justified himself.

But he also expressed a certain amount of sympathy for the 2021 world coach: “I can understand why he never seemed to really feel comfortable at Bayern. He got into a phase in which the club was somewhat leaderless.”

Despite these difficult circumstances, Tuchel is still hoping for a conciliatory conclusion in Munich. A catch-up race seems unlikely in the Bundesliga, but Munich can still hope for the title in the Champions League. In the quarter-finals we face Arsenal FC, while Real Madrid or Manchester City await in the semi-finals.

A soulful one-two in midfield, a powerful sprint towards the goal, unassailable for all opponents, crowned by a well-considered finish into the far corner: Leroy Sané started the current Bundesliga season with a scene that is so typical of his game. It shows what the 28-year-old is capable of.
