DETROIT — Romeo Okwara delivered some news of his own Tuesday night.
The veteran defensive end of the Detroit Lions used his Instagram account to announce that he is retiring from the NFL after eight seasons.
“After some introspection and meditation, I have decided to step away from NFL“, wrote The throat on the social media platform.
“The game of football has been the most important part of my life for the better part of 18 years, eight of which I have been fortunate enough to play at the professional level,” he added. “Four of those with my brother. The experiences, friendships, and camaraderie I have been fortunate enough to share with teammates, coaches, and peers is something I will always be grateful for. You mean the world to me, and I will continue to support you for the rest of our lives!”.

The throatThe 28-year-old appeared in 16 games for the Lions last season, recording nine tackles, five quarterback hits and a pair of sacks as a reliable part of the rotation. He was about to become a free agent.
In 2016, he entered the league as an undrafted free agent to be signed by the New York Giantswhere he spent his first two seasons before being claimed via waivers by the Lions in 2018.

He led the Lions in sacks in 2018, with 7.5, which were the most for a player in his first season with the team after being claimed via waivers in the club’s history. He started in 32 games of his 92 games played, finishing with 158 total tackles, 26 tackles for loss, 25 sacks and 58 quarterback hits.
His 23.0 career sacks also rank fourth among all players in the league. NFL born in Nigeria.
