Democratic Congressman Adam Schiff Wins US Senate Primary in California

The representative wins the Democratic primary for the US Senate.

In the primary election for the California Senate seat left vacant by the death of Dianne Feinstein in December, voters gave Democratic Congressman Adam Schiff a narrow lead over Republican candidate Steve Garvey with a third of the vote. However, the former baseball star is unlikely to have a chance in the November elections, as California is and is likely to remain a Democratic stronghold. However, the 63-year-old Schiff had played up Garvey during the election campaign because he was trying to prevent direct competition from his group colleague Katie Porter: In the “jungle primaries” in California, candidates from all parties compete against each other and the top two places are then determined the competitors in the November elections.

Schiff was supported by AIPAC and his party’s establishment. The lawyer became known after 2017 for his role as the energetic and competent head of the Intelligence Committee in the investigation into Trump’s connections with Russia. The Porter party left is more critical of Israel than Schiff and has therefore become a target of the “official pro-Israel lobby”.

However, AIPAC failed with a campaign in California’s 47th District. There, Democratic state Sen. Dave Min prevailed in the race for Katie Porter’s seat despite a “flood of negative campaigning from AIPAC,” according to JTA. According to the report, however, there is little evidence of Min’s critical or even anti-Israel stance. He is of Korean origin and was supported in previous elections by AIPAC’s competitor J-Street.

The AIPAC-affiliated United Democracy Project had attacked Min on a drunken driving charge that Min received last year and spent $4 million on it. At the same time, the UDP supported Schiff with five million dollars and has now declared: “His victory is further proof that pro-Israel is good politics.” Groups like the UDP were also successful in Texas, where Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher defeated a competitor who had called for the end of defense aid to Israel.

In Fort Worth, Texas, Republican Craig Goldman won a runoff election against fellow party member John O’Shea. The businessman therefore has a good chance of becoming the third Jewish Republican to enter the US Congress in November (Link).
