Daniil Medvedev secures spot in Miami Open semi-finals with victory over Nicolás Jarry

Daniil Medvedev sealed his pass to the semifinals of the Miami Open early Thursday morning. The Russian, current champion, won 6-2, 7-6 (7) over the Chilean Nicolás Jarry in a match that he controlled without too many problems and that had a curious moment before it began.

The two players were completing their warm-up when one of Jarry’s serves hit one of the ball kids. The girl slipped when she saw the ball hitting her body, with the bad luck that when she fell she ended up receiving the impact.

An unfortunate action that, fortunately, ended without major consequences and that allowed us to verify the values of the Chilean player, who did not hesitate to cross the court to inquire about the young woman’s condition.

Despite the elimination, Jarry equaled his best result in a Masters 1,000 in Miamisince until now it had only reached the quarterfinals of tournaments of this caliber on one occasion (Shanghai, 2023).

At night time of an important match, Jarry had in front of him a fight of giants not only because of Medvedev’s undoubted quality but also because both tennis players measure no less than 1.98 meters.

The only precedent between them was far away: a victory for Medvedev in Barcelona in 2019.

Jarry started with aplomb, exhibiting confidence in his serve and not letting the stage intimidate him, but Medvedev is one of the toughest rivals on the circuit, an inexhaustible tennis player capable of returning impossible shots and who requires an extra dose of both patience and precision. .

A 15-40 in his second turn of service was the first important challenge for the man from Santiago. He responded well by saving two break balls, but on the third he sent a backhand into the net and lost serve (3-1).

Jarry had the majority of the public in his favor and the Chilean fans did not stop cheering him on with shouts of “Come on, Nico.”

However, he was paying dearly for his mistakes against an undaunted, implacable and imposing Medvedev who did not have to face a single break ball against him in the entire first round.

Jarry was asked by his team to take more risks, but he got stuck again in some very inappropriate errors and, with a forehand that went too long, he lost his serve once again and Medvedev closed the first set in 32 minutes (6 -2).

The Chilean did not give up, taking his rival to a tiebreak in the second set. There, a series of unforced errors ended up costing him the set and the match.
