Daniil Medvedev Opens Up About Balancing Fatherhood and Tennis Ahead of Miami Open Defense

Daniil Medvedev has faced the challenge of being a father every day for approximately a year and a half, which is why his world no longer revolves only around tennis. Fatherhood has flooded his life fully in what is a constant search to find the ideal balance. Thus, before starting his path at the Miami Open, the Russian confessed how this has influenced his day-to-day life.

The men’s tennis circuit has also been filled lately with fathers like Rafa Nadal, Daniil Medvedev o Lorenzo Musetti more recently. Not only have women become mothers, but the ATP has been filled with examples of tennis players who combine their job with raising a family. This is the case of the Russian, who usually travels with his wife Daria and for a few months his daughter Alisa, born in October 2022, has also accompanied them. Thus, Medvedev spoke to the media in the Miami Open about this new stage in his life before trying to defend the title won last year.

Daniil tries to find a balance between dedicating so many hours to tennis, including competition and training, and attending to his responsibilities as a father. Together with Daria, Medvedev has formed a great team and believes that this new responsibility has more than positive consequences on his behavior on the court and on the way he views life. “As a player, I don’t think fatherhood has changed me, but I hope it helps me mature a little. Many times I am still immature on the court, but I feel like I am improving little by little each year. That is my goal. In life I hope it has also made me more mature and more responsible. Without a doubt, being a father is a great responsibility.”he told the media in Miami.

The Russian’s luck is that he is not alone in this experience of fatherhood, but his wife follows him around the world, taking care of Alisa when Medvedev has to focus on his work. And the Russian recognizes the sacrifices of his wife and how she takes on the difficulties of her hectic life: “It’s not easy with tennis because if you want to see your daughter a lot, your wife has to sacrifice a lot. She has to travel with the baby, and many times she is the one who takes the plane and not me. Being on a plane with a baby is not easy. I’ve done it a couple of times, but she’s done it ten times more than me.”.

CHANGES

Being a father has meant a change in all aspects, having to think not only about himself and tennis, but also about how to fit the pieces with his family. Things like modifying his training routines at tournaments is something the Russian is feeling obligated to do, but he confesses that he is doing everything he can to fit those pieces together and be a good father: “It’s a balance. Sometimes my wife sacrifices some of her time and energy to attend tournaments with our daughter and sometimes I am the one who has to train less somewhere, or maybe during the tournament I just have to find time. Before I would be in full tennis mode, but now I have to find the balance to also see my daughter, otherwise it wouldn’t be a good life. “I’m trying and I think I’m doing well, but I always try to find this balance.”
