Dani Alves requests release on bail

Brazilian footballer Dani Alves, convicted of rape, asked on Tuesday to be released on bail pending a decision on his appeal. His legal team suggested posting a 50,000 euro ($54,000) bail or handing over his two passports to guarantee he would remain in Spain.

During a closed-door hearing in a Barcelona court, Alves’ lawyer argued that the player had already served a quarter of his sentence as he had been in custody since January 2023, legal sources said.

Alves was sentenced to four and a half years in prison in February. The 40-year-old, a former professional from FC Barcelona and Paris St. Germain, among others, was found guilty by a Spanish court of raping a woman in a nightclub in Barcelona in December 2022.

Alves, who spoke at the hearing via videoconference from prison, assured judges that he would not flee and said he had faith in the justice system. Prosecutors rejected his request on the grounds that he posed a high flight risk.
