Dallas Mavericks secure last direct playoff spot in Western Conference with win over Utah Jazz

DALLAS (AP) — Luka Doncic had 34 points, nine rebounds and eight assists and the Dallas Mavericks beat the Utah Jazz 113-97 on Thursday to reach sixth place and the last direct berth to the playoffs in the Western Conference.

Dallas improved to 41-29 with its third straight win and seventh in eight games. The Mavs are a half-game ahead of Sacramento and Phoenix, both of whom played this Thursday.

Doncic played only four minutes of the final period and did not have any assists or rebounds. He made 11 of 23 field goals and 4 of 10 three-pointers.

Daniel Gafford added 24 points, his most since joining the team in February. Gafford missed the final minutes of the second period after falling to the ground before being helped to the locker room, but returned for the second half.

Kyrie Irving finished with 16 points, 11 in the second half.

The Jazz lost a sweep in back-to-back road nights after losing Wednesday at Oklahoma City and have lost four in a row. They are eight games behind the mini-tournament spots.
