Czech Tennis Players Rise in World Rankings After Strong Showing at Indian Wells Tournament

Jiří Lehečka moved up to 27th place in the world rankings after participating in the quarterfinals of the tournament in Indian Wells. Two more Czech tennis players improved their career highs in the ATP Tour rankings after advancing to the 2nd round of the “fifth Grand Slam”: Tomáš Macháč is now 60th and Jakub Menšík is 70th.

In Indian Wells, the 22-year-old Lehečka defeated, among others, world number five Andrei Rublev from Russia and eleventh place Stefanos Tsitsipas from Greece. He became the first Czech tennis player since Tomáš Berdych in 2017 to reach the quarterfinals of the Masters series tournament, in which he was not good enough for the Italian Jannik Sinner, who had been undefeated until then this year. In the ranking, Lehečka was at the 23rd place at the highest in mid-January.

The best-ranked Czech tennis player is in eighth place Markéta Vondroušová, who withdrew in Indian Wells before the 3rd round match due to the death of her grandfather and will not play in the subsequent tournament in Miami either. There are a total of eight Czechs in the elite hundred.

At the head of the ranking are the Serbian Novak Djokovic, who was unexpectedly eliminated in the 3rd round in Indian Wells, and the champion Iga Šwiateková from Poland.
