Cuban Judokas Shine at Judo Grand Slam in Tbilisi

Havana, March 25 (PL).- Cuban Andy Granda, Tashkent 2022 world champion, won one of the two bronze medals in over 100 kilograms at the Judo Grand Slam in Tbilisi, Georgia.

In the bronze medal discussion, Granda surpassed the Slovakian Marius Fizel to achieve the best performance of the Cubans in the competition.

Granda dominated his group, then in the quarterfinals he defeated the German Losseni Koné by ippon, and in the semifinals he could not beat the Azerbaijani Ushangi Kokauri, world runner-up in Baku 2018.

For her part, Cuban Idalys Ortiz, London 2012 Olympic champion and several-time world champion, finished fifth at more than 78 kilos, falling in the fight for bronze against the Italian Asya Tavano via shidos.

Ortiz won three fights in the event, including one against the Chinese Xin Su, recent champion in Taschkent, but fell in the semifinals against the French Coralie Hayme, who surprised her with 20 seconds left to finish the fight and beat her by ippon.

The Cuban Iván Silva (90 kg) won one fight and lost another and the young Lianet Cardona (78 kg) fell in her first presentation.

Cuba came in 18th place among more than 80 participating countries.
