Cuban Judokas Compete at Grand Slam in Tbilisi for Olympic Qualification

Jonathan Charón, Orlando Polanco and Aleanny Carbonell did not take long to say goodbye to the tatami of the Grand Slam in Tbilisi, capital of Georgia, where judokas from the five continents compete with a view to the Paris Olympic Games this summer.

According to the official site of the International Federation (www.ijf.org), referenced by the Cuban News Agency (ACN) Charón, in the 60 kilograms (kg) and Carbonell (52 kg) won their first fights, but lost in their second, while Polanco (66 kg) was surpassed in the third of the duels.

Charón defeated the Costa Rican Sebastián Sancho by Ippon, but then fell in another close fight and in that same way against the Ukrainian Dilshot Khalmatov.

For her part, the young Alianny Carbonell opened with victory for Wazari against the Indonesian Maryam March Maharani and was later beaten by Ippon – three Shidos caution – against the Croatian Ana Viktorija Puljiz.

Polanco seemed unstoppable when he triumphed by quick Ippon over the Georgian Tornike Maziashvili and eliminated Hekim Agamammedov, from Turkmenistan, in Golden Rule and by hansoku-make.

His victorious step, however, was interrupted by the Uzbek Sardor Nurillaev.

This Saturday Magdiel Estrada (73 kg) and Maylín del Toro (63 kg) will take to the tatami of the Tbilisi Grand Slam, while on Sunday Iván Silva (90 kg), Andy Granda (+100 kg), Leanet Cardona ( 78 kg) and Idalis Ortiz (+78 kg).

So far, Kazakhstan leads the standings with one gold and one bronze medal, followed by Georgia (1-0-0), South Korea (1-0-0) and Spain (1-0-0) , four countries with at least one of the five crowns disputed this Friday, to which Russia (1-0-0) is added, a nation whose judokas compete with a neutral team due to the sanctions that weigh on Moscow.

531 athletes, 296 men and 235 women, from 83 countries participate in Tibiisi until next Sunday, in search of points for the ranking world that defines the Olympic for the Paris 2024 Games.

Cuban judo and its Olympic weight

Judo was introduced to Cuba in 1951 by teacher Andrés Kolychkine Thonson, who arrived from the Black Belt school in Belgium.

After boxing, judo is the second sport that has achieved the most Olympic success, with 36 medals of different colors that support its dominance on the tatami.
