Cuban Judoka Claims Gold at Upper Austria Grand Prix

World runner-up in Baku-2018, the 28-year-old native of Matanzas defeated the Spanish Tristani Mosakhlishvili by two waza-aris in the final, after beating the young Georgian Giorgi Jabniashvili in one of the semifinals of the category.

Silva had previously surpassed the Austrian Adam Borchashvilli, the Dutch Ian Van Herk and the Israeli Li Kochman, in that order.

The Cuban arrived at the Upper Austria Grand Prix in seventh place in the universal ranking, the second highest in the competition, behind the Hungarian Krisztian Toth (third), who left without medals.

The 90 kilogram bronze medals ended up on the chests of Jabniashvili and Kochman.

Silva’s was the third Latin American title in the competition, after the victories on Friday of the Brazilian Larissa Pimienta in the 52 kilograms and yesterday of the Puerto Rican María Pérez in the 70.

Another judoka from Cuba advanced to the final in Austria, the Tashkent-2022 world champion in the 100+, Andy Granda, later rival of the Czech Lukas Krpalek.
