Cuban Judoka Andy Granda Wins Bronze at Grand Slam of Tbilisi

The bronze medal won this Sunday by Andy Granda was the most outstanding performance of the Cuban judo army in the Grand Slam of Tbilisi, in Georgia, where it finished in 18th place.

The man from Matanzas, an exponent of the more than 100 kilogram division, defeated the Slovakian Marius Fizel by ippon in the fight for that medal, according to a report from the Cuban News Agency (ACN).

Granda began with a warning (shido) against him, but then his rival received two, until the Ippon of victory came for the Caribbean, when the board showed 2:49 minutes, the information adds.

Before reaching that stage, the Cuban beat the Polish Kacper Szczuronski and the German Losseni Kong, but then lost through Ippon to the Azerbaijani Ushangi Kokauri, who sent him to the play-off phase.

The recent result props up the Cuban in the qualification zone for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, something that will be defined through a ranking in which he occupied fifth place, prior to the Georgia competition and thanks to the silver medal won in the Austrian Grand Prix.

Idalys Ortiz (78 kg) was close to the podium, but in the fight for bronze she lost by three warnings against the Italian Asya Tavaro and finished in fifth place, after achieving two successes and one setback, the media reports.

The multi-laureate from Artemisa, owner of 25th place in the rankings, defeated the Russian Anastasia Kholodilina, who competes for a neutral team, and the South Korean Hyeonji Lee. She was then surpassed with an immobilization technique by the French Carolina Hayme, who by immobilization technique.

The other Cubans in action on the closing day were Iván Silva (90 kg), who used the local Luka Bautside and suffered a setback against the Azerbaijani Eljan Hajiyev; and Lianet Cardona (78 kg), defeated in her debut by the Kosovar Loriana Kuka.

Cuba had scored points earlier with Maylín del Toro’s seventh place finish in the 63 kilogram division.

The hosts dominated the medal table with four gold medals and one bronze, followed by Spain (2-0-0), Canada (1-2-1), Croatia (1-1-0), Germany (1-0- 3), South Korea (1-0-3), Kazakhstan (1-0-1) and Ukraine (1-0-1). The Russians, competing as neutrals, added the two remaining crowns.
