Criciúma’s Reinforced Squad Ready to Take on the Brazilian Championship

After returning to Série A, with long-term work, with two national accesses with Cláudio Tencati in charge, Criciúma strengthened itself for the dispute in the Brazilian Championship and has some well-known names on the Brazilian scene, such as: Éder, Miguel Trauco , Marquinhos Gabriel and Felipe Vizeu. In addition to these players, the tiger also signed Yannick Bolasie, a famous Congolese striker with a long spell in English football. Given this, the objective is to create stability in the first division starting this season, which tends to be challenging.

Generally, Criciúma varies its platform within games, but has been using a 4-1-3-2 formation, prioritizing the attacking duo up front and alternating between Éder, Kayzer, Vizeu. Marcelo Hermes and Miguel Trauco, two native left-backs, can play together, with the Peruvian on the midfield line. For the Brazilian Championship, with the arrival of Bolasie and other players, Tencati can adopt a type of 4-3-3, something that has already been tested in the Santa Catarina Championship, but without pure wingers.

When passing the ball, Criciúma usually uses the exit with a line of four players, being able to vary the positioning of the full-backs, who at times are more projected. One of the midfielders seeks to get closer to be a passing line option and generate support for the first line, usually in a 4+1. However, Criciúma also has direct play as an alternative, especially in pressure situations. Felipe Vizeu tends to be very important as a target when this scenario happens.

Using the 4-1-3-2 as a base, with the two attackers occupying the opposing defense line, there is a lot of mobility for the attacking midfielder to create plays and variation in the characteristics of the players who complete the line of three. There is the possibility of using 4-3-3, with Kayzer or Vizeu falling on the sides, when Éder is in the center, or choosing two wingers with natural characteristics of the position, such as João Carlos and Bolasie. Regardless of the system, the team depends a lot on the creativity of its players who play in midfield, such as Marquinhos Gabriel and Felipe Mateus, who are often able to associate in the middle and also take advantage of the full-backs on the side of the field, especially on the left with Hermes or Trauco.

In the defensive moment, they can vary the structure, but they generally start from 4-1-3-2, leaving a lot of space between the lines and, at times, with a lack of intensity in the pressure on the part of the attackers. These aspects may be latent weaknesses of the team against more important opponents.

Furthermore, Cláudio Tencati also uses the 4-2-3-1, 4-4-2 and 4-1-4-1. Regardless of the defense formation chosen, one point to pay attention to is the return of the most advanced players, which, in many moments, is carried out slowly, making it difficult to assemble the structure of the defensive block and may leave the team in numerical inferiority. Another recurring problem is the spaces between the lines when defending, especially when there is only one player in front of the defense as a midfielder.

In the offensive dead ball, the team seeks to carry out many rehearsed plays, and can be very dangerous in them, being a great alternative to impact games and score goals. In defensive set pieces, he usually defends the corner in a mixed way, with greater focus on the sector (zone).

A technical reference in Criciúma’s attack since his arrival, the striker will be one of the names that can most impact Tigre’s games, despite his 37 years. In the access campaign, Éder had 11 goal contributions (nine goals and two assists) in the 26 games he played. In the current season, he found the net three times in ten games. With his good technical ability to associate with his teammates, create plays and finish on goal, the player will be important for the team’s aspirations in the championship.

Right-back with good experience in Brazilian football, Claudinho draws attention due to his physical profile for the position and good technical skills to impact the team in attack and defense. In some games he played in more offensive positions, such as right winger or second midfielder and managed to perform well. The 23-year-old tends to evolve even further this season, both up front, having already scored three goals this year, but mainly when defending, with a good average of interceptions per game at Catarinense (5.61).

A player with good international and national team experience, Miguel Trauco should be one of the pillars of Criciúma’s defense this season, even if he could alternate with Marcelo Hermes at times or even play together, as happened at the start of the season. Normally one of them plays as a winger and the other as a midfielder on the left. He has a lot to add to the team, including on set pieces.
