Community Defends Destiny 2’s New Wave-Based Activity “Into The Light” amid Initial Negativity

Destiny 2 just gave players their first look at a new wave-based activity with Into The Light on April 9, but community members have already spoken out to defend it against a wave of initial negativity.

Although Onslaught is part of an upcoming Destiny 2 update that is completely free, reactions in the reveal stream chat focused on the fact that the new activity, called Onslaught, takes place on a destroyed version of the Crucible Map Midtown. Onslaught will also bring back popular weapons from the past like the Midnight Coup, rather than introducing new weapons for players. A screenshot from a post on expressed.

Good change from Destiny 2 still comes across as “lazy”.

“How long have we been asking for a horde mode,” said one player, referencing the fact that the wave-based playstyle has been one of the community’s top demands since Destiny 2 launched. “This is probably one of the best designs for repeatable activities,” he added, lamenting that players are talking about reused content instead.

Destiny 2 content creator Ascendant Nomad expressed similar sentiments. “A reused PvP map means they’ve spent more time on the intricacies of the game mode, and it looks really good,” he said, adding that the fun the game mode is and the loot it brings available will far outweigh the location. Still, it has a bad aftertaste, as Bungie definitely could have tried harder, so the mode comes across as a consolation.

Bungie’s defense of its decision was further supported by examples from the studio’s history in the Halo franchise. Firefight, a similar wave-based activity first introduced in Halo 3: ODST, used areas from campaign levels and multiplayer maps rather than creating entirely new arenas. Onslaught follows in Firefight’s footsteps, and former Destiny 2 community manager Dylan Gafner was happy to make the comparison. “Firefight maps that utilize MP maps are perfectly fine and a hell of a lot of fun, especially when they add little twists,” he wrote in his response to Ascendant Nomad.

Destiny 2 is about to release “The Final Shape”

And Onslaught has lots of little twists like that. While the mode takes place on familiar terrain, it features building defenses, upgrades, and trips to pyramid ship locations to defeat bosses and trigger rifts – all of which make the game’s atmosphere in the rubble of Midtown very different than in one average PvP match.

While we won’t get full details on what loot will be available until next week’s stream on March 26th, Bungie has already announced that players who reach the highest waves on the harder difficulties will be able to collect plenty of loot.

After months of talk of Destiny 2 looking bleak, sparked by dwindling player numbers and a lackluster Guardian Games event, it’s an unexpectedly heartwarming sight to see many fans rallying behind the developer and reaffirming their enthusiasm for Into The Light. The free update is Destiny 2’s last chance to build hype for The Final Shape’s launch in June after a long delay, making the support even more important.
