Club Brugge’s Disappointing 2023-2024 Season: The Ronny Deila Era

2023-2024 was supposed to be Club Brugge’s season. Although it turned out a little differently than people expected in the Jan Breydel Stadium.

Ronny Deila was brought in as coach of Club Brugge. His passage at Standard moved friend and foe. The Norwegian managed to bring a lot of fire and passion into the Rouches team and that was exactly what blueblack needed.

The start of the competition was certainly not bad for Deila and co, but expectations were extremely high. The misery started at the beginning of September. The defeat against KAA Gent was followed by draws against Anderlecht, STVV and Genk.

On October 8, they lost again to a visit to Standard and that seemed to be the final straw for the Club Brugge board. Even then, consideration was given to replacing Deila with a new coach.

Club Brugge already wanted to fire Deila in October

According to HUMO, Club Brugge contacted Karel Geraerts the day before he signed with Schalke 04 in the German second Bundesliga on October 9 whether he wanted to take over from Jan Breydel.

“I don’t know anything about that,” says Geraerts in an interview with the magazine. He only adds that he was with Club Brugge after last season’s play-offs and refers to the many rumors that were circulating.

In the thick of the title battle, Paul Gheysens even said that Geraerts had already signed for Club Brugge. “He lied, didn’t he? If it had been true, I would now be in Bruges,” Geraerts adds delicately.
