Cincinnati Reds Second Baseman Matt McLain Undergoes Shoulder Surgery, Out Long-Term

(Cincinnati) Cincinnati Reds second baseman Matt McLain had surgery on his left shoulder and will be out long-term as a result.

Published yesterday at 3:35 p.m.

Reds president of baseball operations Nick Krall said the surgery, to repair damaged cartilage and a torn rotator cuff in the shoulder, was performed Tuesday.

“We do not currently know the timetable for his return to play, because there are a wide range of possibilities. We hope to see Matt again this season,” Krall said in a press release on Wednesday.

McLain, 24, hasn’t played since March 17 in spring training camp, and he was injured the next day while diving to catch a grounder during a defensive drill. Reds manager David Bell revealed the injury on March 20, the same day the Reds acquired infielder Santiago Espinal from the Toronto Blue Jays.

McLain hit for a .290 average with 16 homers, 50 RBIs and 14 steals last season. He finished fifth in the National League Most Outstanding Rookie voting.

The Reds will open their season Thursday against the Washington Nationals.
