Christian Streich from SC Freiburg takes a deep look

Christian Streich will make the most of his last eight games as coach of SC Freiburg. Despite his well-considered decision, the 58-year-old is afraid of what will happen afterwards.

“Imagine that I’m sitting at home and after five days the family says that I should get out of the house again so that a certain normality can return,” he said thoughtfully at his first public appearance after the farewell announcement .

Football has determined his life since he was a child. “My structure was training every day – first as a boy, then as a player and now as a coach,” Streich explained at the more than hour-long press conference: “On Monday morning I knew where I had to go and on Sunday morning too. Get up, brush my teeth , shower, get dressed and then go to the stadium to work. I always had structure through work. Now I no longer have work and therefore no more structure.”

He had “never had that in his life.” A new normal is needed. Plans for that? None so far. “I don’t know what will happen to me in June,” Streich said.

The last two years with the triple burden of the European Cup have been a waste. That’s why his decision was “right, no matter what. It was about time.” “It now depends on how much time I need to regenerate and recover.”
