Christian Günter’s Long-Range Goal Secures SC Freiburg a Draw Against FC Bayern

The fact that SC Freiburg managed a 2-2 draw against FC Bayern on Friday evening at the start of the 24th Bundesliga matchday also had something to do with Christian Günter and his long-range shooting skills.

Bundesliga goals from Christian Günter don’t often appear.

The now 31-year-old Breisgauer captain is better known as a defensive wing runner, tackling machine and mouthpiece with his “högschd” Baden dialect. The Villingen-Schwenningen-born eight-time senior national player scored just eleven goals in 307 Bundesliga games.

Günter perhaps achieved the best of all at the start of the game in the duel with record champions Bayern Munich. After FCB keeper Manuel Neuer made two outstanding saves, the defender lurked outside the penalty area – and was actually served the ball seconds later via a header from Nicolas Höfler. This was followed by a strong long-range volley that hit the bottom right of the post.

Grifo wishes Günter “from the bottom of his heart”

The cheers that followed were exuberant – and there was also initial joy after the game, which the Freiburg team gave up after two remarkable Bayern goals and ultimately turned it into a 2-2 thanks to a great Lucas Höler goal Teammate Vincenzo Grifo on Günter’s trick to make it 1-0.

In conversation with DAZN The Italian said with a smile that he was very happy about this great goal – and was thinking about his captain’s recent very long injury break: “He had a terrible time of suffering, but now he’s back again. He’s paid it back , trained hard and rewarded himself with a goal like that today. I wish him that from the bottom of my heart!”

Günter “was a bit surprised himself”

As a reminder: After breaking his arm, the captain was completely lost to Freiburg between August and his comeback at the beginning of February in the 3-1 defeat against Stuttgart and, as he recently said, he himself had to struggle with uncertainty.

It’s all the better that an absolutely remarkable goal was enough to win a point against Bayern Munich – despite the fact that the Breisgauers haven’t been able to win for six league games (two draws, four defeats). From Günter’s point of view, there wasn’t much to complain about after such an evening, but rather to enjoy the moment with a personal highlight in the 12th minute of the game after Roland Sallai’s introductory finish, including the following overhead kick and two great saves: “At first I thought Roland was laying the ball from me, but then he pulls the bicycle kick brutally. I was actually a bit surprised myself, Manu (Neuer; Anm. d. Red.) insane. And then I hit the ball very well…”

With a smile, Günter added: “I had a long time to practice shooting. That’s why someone is allowed to go in there.”
