On the 22nd, the men’s professional basketball team Chiba Jets Funabashi signed a partnership agreement with Sammu City, Chiba Prefecture. We will proceed with initiatives in collaboration with the city, such as opening a new school for elementary and junior high school students operated by the Jets, based in the gymnasium of the former Yamabu Nishi Elementary School, which was closed due to the declining birthrate. The school will hold trial sessions from mid-April, and is scheduled to open in May. The school is divided into three classes based on age, and students are recruited from outside the city. Furthermore, the team will be involved in popularizing competitions and promoting sports by having coaches visit elementary and junior high schools in the city and holding events.

Hiroki Sato, director and partner general manager, said enthusiastically, “It would be interesting to promote the good points of Sanmu City, mainly to the children at the school.I would like to think about that in the future.”

Under the theme of “making Chiba a basketball kingdom,” the Jets are opening schools mainly in the northwestern part of the prefecture around their home base of Funabashi City. They also wanted to expand into the eastern region, and the agreement with Sanmu City was reached because they could use the gymnasium of the same elementary school, which was closed in 2021.

Mayor Hiroaki Matsushita said, “Several schools have closed in recent years due to the declining birthrate, so we can expect to make effective use of public facilities. We want to strengthen this system and continue it.”
