Badminton has been introduced to Chengdu for over a century

Chengdu is one of the earliest cities in China to develop badminton.

Badminton originated in India and was formed in England. In 1910, after badminton was introduced to China from Shanghai, it quickly spread in Guangzhou, Chengdu, Tianjin and other places. However, due to various reasons, its popularity was not high. It was not until the 1970s that it truly entered people’s lives and mass badminton gradually developed.

Compared with table tennis, badminton is more arbitrary – playing table tennis requires “occupying a table”, while playing badminton only requires an open space and 2 rackets. In the 1980s and 1990s, you would often see such a scene on the streets, alleys, and parks of Chengdu – two people picking balls or smashing balls on the street, with enthusiastic neighbors standing next to them as referees and part-time cheerleaders. .

By the end of 2003, the number of Chengdu citizens who practiced badminton all year round was close to 50,000.

In order to further promote the vigorous development of badminton in the city, under the coordination of the Chengdu Sports Bureau, the Chengdu Badminton Association launched the “Sports Chengdu·Daily Badminton” national fitness brand event.

“Tiantian Badminton” led the first wave of badminton fitness craze in Chengdu. In just 3 years of promotion of the series of events, there are already more than 50 badminton halls and more than 300 venues in Chengdu. Citizens who practice badminton all year round The number has doubled to nearly 100,000.
