Charlotte Hornets Option Aleksej Pokusevski to G League: What This Means for the Team’s Future

Just a couple of days after announcing his addition, the Charlotte Hornets have optioned Aleksej Pokusevski to their G League affiliate. Joining him will be Nick Smith Jr., who has played a total of 37 games with the first team this season. The news could be worrying for the Serbian interior in the context of a team that is only competing to secure a high round in the next Draft and that can take as many chances as it wants.

As Steve Clifford pointed out last night, Pokusevski is notable for the very few playing minutes he has had this season. Partly because of injuries and partly because of the Thunder’s internal competitiveness. Specifically, there are 60 total minutes that the Balkan has played in ten games with OKC this season.

Yesterday the coach wanted to give him the opportunity to familiarize himself with the team and be with his new teammates, but he believes he needs a period to shake off the rust. Which does not mean that he will not debut with the Hornets this season. It is not the first time that Poku goes to the G League to let off steam, since while still an OKC player he played 28 games in his first three seasons in the NBA. Curiously, this season he has yet to play a single minute in the development league.
