Chaos in Maastricht: MVV vs FC Dordrecht match ends in controversy and medical emergency

The meeting between MVV and FC Dordrecht had a sad ending on Friday evening. After referee Robert Dieperink had stopped the match due to skirmishes in the stands and a cup of beer was subsequently thrown on the field, there also appeared to be a medical emergency in the stands. A supporter of the home team is said to have fallen from the stands. An ambulance entered the stadium and The Limburger wrote that an air ambulance was soon on its way.

MVV hoped to recover on Friday evening from the disappointing performance in recent weeks, but the home match against FC Dordrecht got off to a disastrous start. Partly due to a painful mistake by goalkeeper Romain Matthys, the visitors were already 0-2 ahead within ten minutes. MVV did not recover from the terrible start. The match was heading for a 1-3 final score, but due to a lot of fuss in the stands it was questionable for a long time whether the match would end at all on Friday evening.

The Limburger summarizes the situation in Maastricht as follows: “The skirmishes between the fans started eight minutes before time. Cups of beer were thrown back and forth. Referee Rob Dieperink then stopped the match for ten minutes. A minute after the match resumed, the taunting started again and a cup of beer was brought onto the field. Meanwhile, there was also a medical emergency. The referee led everyone inside. An ambulance then entered the stadium.” The newspaper wrote about the ‘probable’ arrival of a trauma helicopter and, according to FC Dordrecht watcher Arco Bomgaars of the Algemeen Dagblad the paramedics were indeed assisted by a trauma team.

“The match has not yet been definitively stopped, the first concern is now for the fallen supporter who is receiving medical assistance,” Bomgaars wrote at 10:10 p.m. Half an hour later it was expected that the meeting between MVV and FC Dordrecht would end on Friday evening. The host announced via X, formerly Twitter, that the match would resume around 10:50 p.m. According to Bomgaars, many people had already left the stadium at that time and MVV closed the gates in case people still wanted to return to their seats. However, the supporters who remained did not want the match to resume and threatened to enter the field. MVV and FC Dordrecht had already started a short warm-up, but quickly went back inside. They would stay there, because at 10:56 PM MVV announced that the match had been definitively stopped.
