“There are requests from many quarters for a strong and adequate valorisation of the now consolidated relative tradition to Baseball, an activity born following the Allied landing at the beginning of 1944, together with the heartfelt hope of creating a Museum that somehow connects Landing and Baseball”.
He writes it on the Municipality portal Neptune’s extraordinary commission, which promotes the idea by seeking support from associations and citizens.
“The idea, regardless of who proposes it, can certainly be cultivated, finding many supporters among the local population, and therefore it is believed in some way to spread it publicly in order to collect hopefully positive contributions and contributions with a view to realization, linking the event of the Landing and the sporting practice which brought so much prestige to the image of this beautiful city.
The Nettuno Baseball Museum is an initiative intended to celebrate the history, introduction, growth and influence of Baseball in the city of Nettuno. The project, in its embryonic stage, aims to honor the link between the Allied landing in Nettuno during the Second World War and the introduction of baseball in Italy thanks to the American soldiers.
In 2024 we will celebrate 80 years since the “Birth” of Baseball in Nettuno.
Phase 1: Creation of the Museum
Create a Museum dedicated to the history of Baseball in Nettuno, in the context of the current Landing Museum, accessible via a dedicated website.
Phase 2: Collection of Artifacts and Documents
Involve local institutions, sports associations and families to collect artifacts, uniforms, equipment and documents relating to the history of Baseball in Nettuno, also organizing a fundraising campaign to finance the acquisition and conservation of these materials. Prepare exhibition halls, display cases, lighting, storage, safety and fire plan, volunteer schedules.
Phase 3: Marketing and Promotion
Implement a marketing and promotion strategy on online and offline platforms to increase awareness of the Nettuno Baseball Museum, linked to the Landing Museum. Collaborate with travel agencies, the US Department of State and tour operators to include the Museum in their tour packages.
Phase 4: Creation of Thematic Itineraries
Develop thematic itineraries that guide visitors through historical baseball-related locations in the city of Neptune, including ballparks, soldiers’ gathering places and points of historical interest. Integrate digital technologies, such as mobile apps or audio guides, to enrich the visitor experience. Interpretive and expository themes will be compatible with Interpretation as established by the National Association for Interpretation (USA).
Phase 5: Training Programs and Special Events
Organize history training programs for local schools and youth groups to spread the rules of baseball. Plan special events, such as historic baseball games, lectures, film screenings and temporary exhibits, to engage the local community and visitors.
Step 6: Installing the Gamer Soldier Statue
Possibly place a life-size statue of the Soldier in the main square of Nettuno, near the train station or other place to be identified. The statue will serve as a focal point for the Museum, to interest visitors in the Museum, to identify the location and how to get there, and at the same time to symbolize the beginning of the spread of Baseball in Italy. This reinforces the existence of Neptune’s motto “City of Baseball”.
In light of the above, the Nettuno Landing and Baseball Museum would represent a unique opportunity to celebrate the history and culture of baseball in Italy, and to honor the contribution of Allied soldiers during the Second World War.
Through the preservation of the historical heritage, statistical exhibitions, and dissemination activities, the Museum would contribute to keeping alive the memory of the Landing event, would increase the passion for Baseball and, at the same time, would strengthen intercultural dialogue and the sporting spirit in a context that goes beyond the local context”.
