Celebrating Dreams: School-Age Athletes Shine in Ciego de Ávila

If a saying could sum up what we experienced last weekend in Ciego de Ávila, it is “when you want, you can.” Against all odds, the sports facilities of the capital city were filled with school-age athletes from various provinces of the country.

More than 500 souls who dreamed of a triumph, whether in swimming, field hockey or judo. A party for our child-athletes, who spend the entire year studying and training, and in recent times have seen their chances of competing diminished.

Under other circumstances, the news would not attract attention, but in the midst of the country’s current economic situation, organizing and realizing the dreams of future champions is surprising and deserves applause.

There was a confrontation in the pool of the Julio Antonio Mella Provincial Swimming Academy, where the athletes from Sancti Spíritus and the headquarters, both on the podium of the last National School Games, measured their strength on Saturday and Sunday.

Also on the brand new synthetic hockey field there were stops with teams that will participate in the upcoming school fair, in the month of July, which will, by the way, have that facility as its headquarters.

But the highlight, without a doubt, was the Dany Pelegrín Judo Cup, in the Giraldo Córdova Cardín Room, in which more than 400 competitors from 11 provinces gathered, in the 13-14 years and 15-17 categories.

Representatives from Pinar del Río, Granma, Holguín, Camagüey, Sancti Spíritus, Villa Clara, Cienfuegos, Havana, Mayabeque, Artemisa and ours were here. The cups and control stops are part of the preparation for the 60th edition of the National School and Youth Games.

These same little ones will return to a competitive mattress of the 1st. next July 15, in Santiago de Cuba, at the great annual school event, and here, in Ciego de Ávila they have just measured their possibilities.
