Carolina Marín wins Swiss Open after thrilling final against Tunjung

MADRID, 24 (EUROPA PRESS)
The Spanish badminton player Carolina Marín has conquered the Swiss Open, a Super 300 category tournament of the BWF World Tour, after winning this Sunday in the final and lifting a match point from the Indonesian Gregoria Mariska Tunjung (21- 19, 13-21, 22-20).

In this way, the triple world champion and six-time European champion confirms her good feelings in this first quarter of the year, after also winning the title at the prestigious All England last week. Thus, she lifts her 27th trophy on the circuit and improves her chances of being ‘Top 4’ in the Olympic ranking before Paris 2024.

At the St. Jakobshalle stadium in Basel, the Huelva player was able to overcome a 4-0 deficit at the start of the match and stay in the fight. After the halfway point of the set, with four consecutive wins, they took the initiative for the first time (13-11).

The Asian, eighth in the world ranking, responded to regain her advantage, but Marín took +4 which allowed her to reach a good advantage at the end of the first period and confirm her victory. However, Tunjung did not suffer the blow and barely offered any alternatives to the Andalusian in the second set, which closed with a comfortable 13-21.

Everything would be decided in the third set, in which Marín’s rival managed to escape 4-10. The current world runner-up did not give up and won eight of the next nine points to take the lead (12-11), but the tie was not broken.

Thus, Tunjung had the upper hand at 19-20, but Marín managed to neutralize him and turn it around to, in his first opportunity, tip the match in his favor. The Spaniard, who has overcome two serious knee injuries, is crowned for the second time in Basel, after also winning in 2021.

“Very, very happy. It was a very tough match in which I fought until the end, I did not give up. It was very important to remain focused on the game plan, on what I had to do, to continue trusting. Trophy, home. Time to rest a little. I still don’t know if I will play the Madrid Masters,” said Marín.
