Like last year, Carlos Alcaraz (ATP 2) was a size too big for Daniil Medvedev (RUS, ATP 4). The Spaniard confidently defended the title in Indian Wells with 7:6 (7:5), 6:1 in the final. After 1:42 hours he used his first match point.
«Winning tournaments helps. That gives you confidence for the next tournaments and everything that comes,” said Alcaraz after his victory. In the first set, the world number two was already 0-3 behind, but then fought back and ultimately won the round in the tiebreak. In the second round he only lost one game and had little trouble winning the first Masters tournament of the season.
First title since Wimbledon
The victory meant a lot to him because he traveled to Indian Wells in ailing condition, Alcaraz reported. «I had a lot of doubts, especially about my ankle. I didn’t play my best tennis, I didn’t feel good. But then I improved game by game.”
Alcaraz ended a long losing streak and celebrated his first tournament victory since Wimbledon 2023, his 13th overall on the ATP Tour. The Spaniard ended Jannik Sinner’s winning streak in the semi-finals after 16 consecutive victories.
Swiatek without losing a set
In the women’s category, the world number 1 delivered a demonstration of power. Thanks to a 6:4, 6:0 over Maria Sakkari (WTA 9) in the final, Iga Swiatek also won the tournament for the second time in the Californian desert. She had already defeated the Greek in the final at the same venue in 2022.
Throughout the entire tournament, Swiatek didn’t give up a single set in six games and only lost 21 games. It is the 22-year-old’s second title this year, after she had already triumphed in Doha (also at WTA 1000 level). The four-time Grand Slam winner was surprisingly eliminated in the third round of the Australian Open.
