Capitals and Wizards are not leaving Washington

The National Hockey League (NHL) and the National Basketball Association (NBA) still have teams based in the US capital Washington. Both the Capitals (NHL) and the Wizards (NBA) are staying in Washington after talks about a move.

Mayor Muriel E. Bowser and Ted Leonsis, who owns both franchises, signed an agreement Wednesday that would allow the Wizards and Capitals to remain in the city until 2050, if the Washington City Council approves. The shared home, Capital One Arena, is being renovated.

According to the agreement, the city will invest $515 million (476 million euros) in the hall over the next three years. Due to these renovations, Leonsis will sign a new lease that runs from 2025 to 2050.

“We are the current and future home of the Washington Capitals and Washington Wizards,” Bowser said. “It was not only the right thing for the community, but it was the right thing for the city, the right thing for us.”
