Capital One Arena Renovation Secures Wizards’ Future in D.C. Until 2050

NBA – While the owners wanted a new arena and new facilities in Virginia or Maryland, they agreed to stay in the current Wizards arena, obtaining a renovation of more than $500 million.

After receiving a “stop” from the Court of Auditors of the Virginia State Parliament, the owners of the Wizards were considering moving the franchise to Maryland to build a new venue. Ultimately, they opted for plan C, renovating the current Capital One Arena.

Also owner of the Capitals (NHL), Ted Leonsis obtained an envelope of 515 million dollars from Mayor Muriel Bowser, and this agreement allows the capital of the United States to ensure the presence of the Wizards until 2050!

“It’s a really big day, and I’m really relieved.” reacted Ted Leonsis. “Not only was it the right thing to do for the community, for the city and for us, but it was also a very smart business move.” » Because if Ted Leonsis is happy, it is because the city has accepted a project to expand the hall over two hectares, with the addition of a commercial gallery.

Virginia Offered More Opportunities

“This project will have significant positive impacts on economic development, public safety and energy, but also on the general state of mind generated by the millions of people who attend matches, shows and concerts at the Capital One Arena »ignited Attorney General Brian Schwalb.

This agreement therefore puts an end to the desire to move by Monumental Sports & Entertainment, owners of the two franchises, and Ted Leonsis recognized that the city of Alexandria offered more land for its ambitions. “We are in an arms race to build bigger, better and better, and we are running out of space. But it will be enough” he assures.
