Canadian Judoka Shady ElNahas Wins Silver at Grand Slam Tournament in Tbilisi

Canadian Shady ElNahas obtained his first podium of the year 2024 on Sunday by winning silver at the under 100 kg tournament of the Grand Slam of Judo in Tbilisi.

Opposed in the final to the Spaniard Nikoloz Sherazadishvili, an opponent against whom he had lost in their last three duels, ElNahas did not allow himself to be imposed. He was active throughout the fight, launching several attacks that were countered by the former under 90 kg world champion.

It was also a response from the Spaniard which ended the fight. He won by ippon in the third minute of hostilities.

It’s a shame, because Shady really set the tone for the fight and he dominated the hold, commented national coach Antoine Valois-Fortier.

On the other hand, we must give credit to the Spaniard who was patient and who waited for his chance, he continued. He was a two-time world champion in the lower category and he has a lot of experience. He’s a very high caliber guy and Shady has shown he’s got the caliber to compete against him.

Even if this defeat is difficult to swallow for ElNahas, the result is secondary for Valois-Fortier, who preferred to concentrate on the good shots of his protégé. The latter also demonstrated a varied arsenal during this Grand Slam punctuated by four victories in five outings.

Today we saw the real Shady. He found his mojo on the canvas and demonstrated that he had several very good cards in his game. He also knew how to use them at the right time, which bodes very well for the future, concluded Valois-Fortier .

Also competing on Sunday, Canadians Kyle Reyes (- 100 kg) and Louis Krieber-Gagnon (- 90 kg) were eliminated in their first fight.
