“We regret the development and believe it is necessary to give the team a new impetus in order to stabilize the situation,” said managing director Marcel Schäfer, explaining the separation. The decision was made after the home game against Augsburg on Saturday.

VfL had lost 3-1 against FC Augsburg the day before and had therefore remained winless in the tenth league game of the new year. The club is only in 14th place in the Bundesliga table.

VfL won twice in 20 league games

Former Bayern coach Kovač moved to Wolfsburg last season with the hope of leading the club into international tournaments. In the 2022/23 season he missed out on a Europa League place with the club on the last matchday due to a home defeat against relegated Hertha BSC.

There was no further sporting development for his team in the current season. VfL has only won two of the last 20 league games – and that with a well-staffed squad that was strengthened in the summer for more than 70 million euros.

Kovač can look back on a successful career before his time in Wolfsburg: The former Bundesliga professional and Croatian national coach won the DFB Cup with Eintracht Frankfurt in 2018. A year later he even won the double with Bayern Munich.

Bo Svensson (most recently Mainz 05), Ralph Hasenhüttl (most recently FC Southampton) and Matthias Jaissle (Al-Ahli) are considered Kovač’s possible successors.
